Square Off - Math Debate

The Oxford Union Debate is your chance to showcase your prowess in blending the worlds of Mathematics and Debate. Witness teams battle it out on some of the most controversial topics among mathematicians! It is a chance for students to think outside of what we learn in the classroom, foster a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts and principles, and build a shared love for the subject.

Rules and Regulations

  • Persuasive speeches to convince an audience

  • Audience votes on verdict; juror decides top 2 speakers

  • 5-minute speeches; 3-minute audience questioning period; 3-minute rebuttal speech for both sides

  • Proposition speeches first; rebuttal speeches: opposition speaks first

  • Speeches must stick to the topic and be appropriate to the audience
